Nov 2 (Reuters) - Euronext said on Monday that Stéphane Boujnah, who has led the company since 2015, would step down as chief executive next year, with NN Group CEO David Knibbe set to replace him.

The stock exchange operator said the planned move followed Boujnah's decision to step down from his role in May 2027. It plans to nominate Knibbe for the role at its annual general meeting on May 20.

• NN Group said Tjeerd Bosklopper would succeed Knibbe after the insurer's annual general meeting on May 12; he will become CEO-designate on March 1

• Euronext said Knibbe would bring experience from another highly regulated industry with a proven track record of delivering integration and technology transformations

• During his 11 years at Euronext, Boujnah will have overseen its transformation from an Intercontinental Exchange spin-off into one of Europe's leading exchange operators, having most recently bought Greek stock market operator ATHEX

• Boujnah has repeatedly said that Europe's capital markets remain too fragmented, backing the idea of a single European stock exchange and calling on EU policymakers to unlock the trillions of euros held by Europeans in savings

• A trader called Knibbe's appointment a surprise, noting that many had expected long-serving finance chief Giorgio Modica to succeed

• A Euronext spokesperson declined to comment beyond the company's statement, citing a quiet period before the publication of third-quarter results
