June 3 (Reuters) - Italy's largest construction company Webuild said on Wednesday its unit Lane had won a $1 billion contract for a tunnel project in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, in a joint venture with local partner Brayman.

The project is part of the Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) Regional Tunnel System, and consists of about 8 kilometers of deep hydraulic tunnels, Webuild said.

• The tunnel aims to reduce combined sewer overflows during heavy rainfall, preventing direct discharges of untreated water into the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers.

• Lane holds a 50% stake in the joint venture with Bayman.

• The tunnel is the first of three planned under the Regional Tunnel System, part of the Clean Water Plan pursued by ALCOSAN.
