Sustainability Talk: Testimonial from Snam on its Net Zero Assessment
What advantages did Snam gain from conducting a Net Zero Assessment?
In this interview, Alexis Michon, Head of Sustainable Finance Relationship Management at Moody’s Ratings, speaks with Monica de Virgiliis, Chairwoman of Snam (Italy) — the largest European gas infrastructure player — about the recent Net Zero Assessment (NZA) conducted by Moody’s Ratings for Snam.
In February 2024, Snam became the first company in the world to undergo and publish the results of Moody’s NZA, a tool designed to evaluate the robustness of companies' decarbonisation strategies. Following this, in October 2024, Snam unveiled an ambitious transition plan to achieve Net Zero by 2050 and support energy system decarbonisation.
This interview delves into the reasons behind Snam's decision to undergo a NZA, and how the assessment has been utilized by the company. Among others, Monica de Virgiliis explains the relevance of the NZA for a regulated gas infrastructure operator, and the insights gained from the assessment. Additionally, Monica discusses how the NZA has enhanced investor confidence and opened up new sustainable finance opportunities.
