ESG ACHIEVEMENTS AND GOALS

Our mission aims to create long-term value in all its dimensions - Economic, Social and Natural. We understand the paramount importance of upholding sustainability principles as part of our strategy. At Sonae we have a long legacy in sustainability, with a pioneer and visionary role in the commitment and balance of the business with nature and with our communities, and we recognize the fundamental role that education plays towards social equity. We exist to actively shape the future we all want and need, and we strive to have a meaningful impact today to ensure a better future for all.

As a multinational group managing a diverse business portfolio, Sonae’s sustainability strategy is tailored to itself, based on guiding principles that convey orientation, focus and ambition, serving each of our companies while also respecting their autonomy and industry specificities.

Sonae’ sustainability strategy for the next four years is based on four strategic action axes: to accelerate decarbonisation; to value biodiversity and water; to promote circularity; and to foster human development, driven by a central and transversal axis that is to manage with environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.

Consequently, we have established important commitments and targets and work actively with our portfolio companies, namely to:

  • Achieve carbon neutral operations (scope 1+2) by 2040, reduce GHG emissions (scope 1+2) by 53% by 2032 (vs 2022), and take active measures to reduce scope 3 GHG emissions;
  • Actively contribute to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, ensure zero deforestation in operations and supply chain by 2030, and take action to protect and improve efficiency of water resources utilization;
  • Assure the increase of products and services circularity and ensure waste valorisation;
  • Promote eco-design in own brand product packaging, namely achieve plastic packaging of our own brand products 100% reusable, recyclable or compostable and incorporate, on average, 30% recycled plastic into new packaging by 2025;
  • Ensure a diverse and satisfied team in the workplace, promote the career progression of our employees and achieve gender parity by 2026 (45% of leadership positions held by women); and
  • Support continuously the community towards its resilience and autonomy and boost educational programs for community as promoters of equal opportunities.
